| The witch Baba Yaga is a well-known personage from the old Russian "Fairy-tale land" There is not a single child in Russia that doesn't know her. This "distant relative" of the Witch from Snow White lives in a Hut on chicken legs, in the midst of the Forest. She travels through the air in her mortar, while her Hut can run on its chicken legs, always hunting for her favourite dinner: Children . In many modern Russian Fairy tales her name pops up too and she and I even encountered Baba Yaga and her Hut in a computer game. Underneath two screenshots of this game ("Quest for Glory") |

| 14) The Witch Baba Yaga's Hut on Chicken Legs
Besides being a painter, Viktor Hartmann was also designer and architect. On the right his(preserved) design for a clock, based on the Witch Baba Yaga's Hut on Chicken Legs. This design inspired Mussorgsky to create his musical picture. In the music you can clearly hear the swishing of the air along the enourmous chicken legs, that wildly chase you through the forest . Sometimes it seems that you've lost it, but then suddenly it emerges again to continue its pursuit. Not strictly a Lullaby !! ![]() |
